Not always. A fridge that runs all the time is usually fighting something: dirty coils, a dead condenser fan, a door that doesn't seal or a frosted coil. A fridge that clicks and hums every few minutes without cooling has a compressor that isn't starting, and the cause is often the start relay or overload, a much smaller repair than the compressor.
Running all the time
Modern fridges run a lot, and long run times on a hot day are normal. Running nonstop and still warm isn't. The usual reasons:
- Dirty condenser coils that can't shed heat.
- A stopped condenser fan (the fan by the compressor at the bottom back).
- A door seal or drawer letting warm air in. Callers sometimes say "the weather stripping is leaking".
- A frosted coil from a defrost failure, so cold air can't circulate.
- A load of warm food. One caller "put too much up in the freezer" and it ran for three days. Give it time after a big shop.
- Low refrigerant from a leak. That's a technician job.

Click, hum, click
If you hear a click, a hum or buzz for a few seconds, then another click, repeating every few minutes, the compressor is trying to start and a safety overload is shutting it off. The fridge slowly warms. Callers describe it as "it kicks on and it will kick off" or "the compressor's not kicking on".
Common causes are a failed start relay or overload (a small part), a weak compressor, or low voltage at the outlet. If unplugging it "seems to work for a couple days", something is marginal, not fixed.
Is the compressor really gone?
Sometimes. But it's one of the most common guesses and one of the most expensive to get wrong. A technician can test the relay, the overload and the compressor windings before calling the compressor. If it is the compressor, that's sealed-system work, and the technician should tell you clearly what it costs so you can decide.
What you can safely check
- Is the condenser fan at the bottom back turning while it runs? Look, don't touch.
- With the fridge unplugged, vacuum the condenser coils.
- Close a piece of paper in the door. If it slides out easily, the seal may be worn.
- Plug it straight into a wall outlet, not an extension cord.
When to call now
- Click-hum-click with no cooling
- It runs nonstop and the fridge is above 40°F
- Burning smell or a very hot back
